Celebration & Party Quick-Start Guide
Birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, retirements and milestone celebrations all benefit from starting with the same question: what should this celebration feel like for the person being celebrated?
Before choosing decorations, favors or a theme, decide what kind of experience you are actually trying to create.
Start with the essentials
- What are we celebrating?
- Who is the guest of honor?
- What would they genuinely enjoy?
- What is our comfortable budget?
- What date/time make sense?
- Approximately how many people?
- Where will it be held?
- What overall style fits: casual, dinner, open house, activity-based, surprise, backyard or formal milestone?
Did You Think of This?
Am I planning the celebration the guest of honor would love — or the one I would love? Sometimes those are the same. Sometimes they are not.
Build the experience
- Food & beverages that fit the time of day
- Music or entertainment
- Meaningful moments such as toasts, slideshows, recognition or group photos
- Décor that actually supports the atmosphere
- Cake or dessert that fits the person
Do not forget logistics
- Invitations / RSVPs
- Parking
- Accessibility
- Setup
- Cleanup
- Deliveries
- Pickups
- Weather backup
- Who owns each event-day job
Thoughtful Touch
Include at least one thing that could only belong to this person: a favorite food, photograph, song, family tradition, funny story or keepsake. That is often more memorable than an elaborate generic theme.
